Dissertation Comic

For my Dissertation I wrote about comics and their use outside of entertainment. This is a subject that I feel strongly about, since in the future I hope to make comics that can be used in an impactful way. To do that I felt it was important to research this topic to see the attitudes towards this medium of narrative, but to also learn more about the art I create.

Once I had written it, I had realised that it would be hypocritical to write about how imperative comics can be for transferring large blocks of text into easy to understand images. Thus I decided to turn the large block of text I had written about comics into a comic itself.

Chapter One: What are comics? (1)

Chapter One: What are comics? (2)

These pages were the first attempts I had made when trying to convert a written chapter into illustrated pages. My first chapter was about what a comic is, I felt that it was important to outline what the medium was before delving into how it could be used

Chapter Two: Learning using comics (1)

Chapter Two: Learning using comics (2)

This chapter outlined comics and how they can be used in learning. Comics are a useful tool in education since an image is easier to understand than a sentence. I also included a personal anecdote on my own struggles with reading and how they were overcome using the aid of picture books and comics.

Chapter Three: Graphic Medicine

This chapter was about comics in medicine (Graphic Medicine) and how / why it is used. The main reason being for complex diagnosis, to aid in explaining the symptoms to the patient or their family. It also proved useful during the COVID outbreak since the images helped to spread the word faster than word of mouth.

Chapter Four: Views on comics

This chapter was about how comics as a medium are viewed in general, the consensus in Britain is that comics are generally seen as humorous and lacking substance. While I argued that comics can be much more, they can be serious or hard hitting as well as childish and entertaining.
