The wonky project was a brief given to us by Hallmark Cards. We were told to use the word 'wonky' to inspire us to create something new and interesting.
The groups were a mix of subjects to help inspire us to use new mediums. My group included two illustration students, two fine art students and a film student. We brainstormed for a while on what to create since we knew we wanted to create an experience. This was because something immersive would suit all of our subjects, since the crafty students could make the props and set while the film students could direct, film and join in the creation process as they pleased.
So what was our idea?
Breakfast
We wanted an experience that was universal yet could be personal so that our idea generation was organic and fresh. We also felt that taking a traditional idea and turning it on its head would fully fit the theme of Wonky.
Through this we each discussed our breakfast traditions, what we ate, who with and made sure to have a weekly group breakfast to get to know each other. Our project idea was to create a breakfast table, each person would contribute a handmade food item and table decorations while I orchestrated the zine which would double as a 'morning paper'.
For the Zine I made as many illustrations I could with the time we had, while also taking pictures or images the team sent me and creating different collages. I wanted the zine to be bold and colourful as it was going on the centre of the table.
The Zine
These were the pages included inside of the Zine. It starts off with an illustration of the group then lead into the collaged photos we took and illustrations. I didn't want the zine to be too large since people would want to flick through as they walked the table, so I kept it light.
I decided to bind and emboss the zine to make it look cleaner, while making it bright yellow to keep the wonky, fun theme. The Zine itself ended up being A3 with a ring bind so that more could be added if necessary.
The Table
Overall this was a really fun experience, I enjoyed working in a group environment especially with people who were new to me and encouraged new experiences. I will defiantly be looking for group experiences like this to work with in the future.
Finally, here are some bonus Illustrations I made during the project that I never used:
